Why Russia cannot upgrade its aircraft carrier?

Russian navy will repair its sole aircraft carrier but “essentially, there is no modernization” because Russia is focusing to get back the carrier as soon as possible when it goes into overhaul in 2018.

According to War Is Boring, it will take two to three years to repair the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov, depending on the scope of the work.

“While the shipyard has completed technical plans to perform the repairs, there is no timeline in place to implement those fixes because a contract has yet to be signed with the Russian Defense Ministry” Sergei Vlasov, director general of Nevsky PKB noted.

One of the reason that the Russia cannot modernized the aircraft it is because the ship needs to be back in the fleet quickly, if it is going in a deep modernization it will take more than 10 years. Russian cannot afford without Kuznetsov because it would lose expertise in other related areas such as carrier operations at sea.

Admiral Flota Sovetskogo Soyuza Kuznetsov (Russian:”Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Kuznetsov”) is an aircraft cruiser (heavy aircraft-carrying missile cruiser, or TAVKR, in Russian classification) serving as the flagship of the Russian Navy.

“It’s clear why, because modernization risks dragging on for 10 years and costing a lot of money. Since Kuznetsov is not so much a combat platform as a training platform, deep modernization for her is an obvious excess.” researcher Mikhail Barabanov, editor of the Moscow Defense Brief.
