Martial Law in Mindanao frightens tourists-DOT

Due to President Duterte’s Martial Law declaration, tourists have chosen to cancel their trips to Mindanao.

“Kung siguro walang martial law, baka walang cancellations. So ‘yong pag-declare ng martial law, may mga natakot, so nag-cancel sila, but they promise to go back once na-lift na ‘yong martial law,” Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo said in an interview with Presidential Communications Assistant Secretary Margaux “Mocha” Uson on Sunday.

Teo also stated that foreign visitors are “more afraid of ISIS than martial law.” “There will always be cancellations. Mayroong nag-cancel, mayroon din nag-book, mayroon din magre-rebook once ready na,” she added.

During press conference on Wednesday, DOT showed that the number of foreign tourists arriving in the country from January to March increased by 11.4 percent compared to last year’s data. On the other hand, DOT still does not have estimate number of foreign visitors in the country after martial law declaration as GMA News reported.
