The House of Representatives on Tuesday voted to give a P1,000 budget to the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) for 2018.
The decision came after 119 representatives voted in favor of the move to slash the budget of the CHR to a thousand pesos from the Department of Budget’s proposed P678 million. Thirty two voted against the motion.
The CHR has been the target of the tirades of President Rodrigo Duterte and his allies as it continues to call out the rising number of killings – more than 3,500 according to police data – in his bloody war on drugs.
Chito Gascon, the chairperson of the CHR said that the CHR would continue to campaign for a decent budget as the deliberations move to the Senate.
