Chinese Coast Guard fire shots to chase off Filipino fishing boats

China’s coastguard fired shots at Filipino fishing boats in West Philippine Sea. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) verifying the harassment claims made by Filipino fishermen in Mariveles, Bataan.

“I have already asked for the latest info on the alleged incident of harassment against Filipino fishermen,” DFA spokesperson Robespierre Bolivar said in a short statement issued on Thursday, April 20.

The fisherman from Mariveles said they were pulling near Union Reef when a Chinese Coast Guard speedboat suddenly appeared and chased them away. The speedboat circled their boats, fired warning shots and signaled them to stay away.

Bolivar has condemned “the aggressive acts of Chinese Coastguard,” saying it was a violation of the Philippines’ sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The reef is located in the West Philippine Sea, the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone in the disputed South China Sea.
